Design Your Gap Year.
Shape Your Life.
Personalized mentorship for self-designed gap years rooted in purpose, growth, and real-world engagement, shaped by your values, your curiosity, and your goals.
"Frieda was one of the first kind souls I met at UNC. I was a nervous 18-year-old about to embark on my gap year, in need of guidance — and Frieda stepped into that role from the very first moment we met."
~ Simone M., Former Global Gap Year Fellow,
UNC-Chapel Hill
This is your year to become.
You have finished high school. College is ahead — and right now, there is a rare and powerful window to pause, reflect, and grow into who you want to be.
A gap year is not a detour. It is an investment — in clarity, confidence, and self-knowledge that will shape everything that comes next. Students who take intentional gap years arrive at college more motivated, more purposeful, and more ready to make the most of it.

There are many ways to spend a gap year. Structured gap year programs can offer meaningful versions of these experiences, but they often come with a significant price tag and a pre-designed itinerary that leaves little room for genuine ownership.
At Kingfisher Horizons, I work with students to…
Build rich experiences on their own terms, at the fraction of the cost of traditional programs.
Design a year that is uniquely theirs.
Identify meaningful service opportunities
Plan ethical and immersive travel
Shape experiences around their values and goals.
Because the act of designing the year is part of the transformation.

Why self-design matters — and how it works.
When students design their own gap year, they are not just planning a trip — it becomes a way of practicing adulthood. They learn to take initiative, make decisions with intention, navigate uncertainty, and build confidence through action. Throughout this process, I provide guidance and support — but students remain the architects of their experience.

This is a guided process — not a preset program.
Here is what working together typically looks like:
1 - DISCOVERY
Clarifying values,
goals, and direction.
2 - DESIGN
Shaping meaningful service experiences, ethical travel, and creative pursuits.
3 - PREPARATION
Logistics, cultural readiness, and thoughtful planning.
4 - MENTORSHIP
Ongoing guidance, reflection, and support throughout the year.
5 - RE-ENTRY
Translating the experience into college and life direction.
The most meaningful experiences are not found — they are built.

Hi, I am Frieda.
I believe in the transformative power of an intentional gap year. I have seen it shape young people's lives in powerful and lasting ways — and I have lived that transformation myself, first as a young student and later as a parent.
I founded Kingfisher Horizons to bring something the gap year world is missing: deeply personalized, research-informed mentorship that helps students design their own meaningful year — without the price tag of a packaged program.
I hold a PhD in Educational Research and Policy and have spent more than 20 years guiding students through transformative learning experiences in international higher education.

A well-designed gap year offers that same rhythm — pause, clarity, and purposeful action. That is exactly what I am here to help you find. If you or your student are looking for something more intentional than a packaged experience, a year shaped by service, reflection, and growth, I would be honored to guide the journey.
